The hate crime attracted vast attention worldwide, bringing sexual discrimination and violence to the forefront of public discourse.
Matthew Shepard was gay. Later, the two young men who assaulted Matthew Shepard are tried. The third act opens with a funeral being held for Matthew Shepard. The reason for this brutal crime? The interviewers ask him about his reaction to the murder. Zackie Salmon Zackie Salmon is an administrator at the University of Wyoming and a lesbian woman originally from Texas.
The judge honors this, and sentences McKinney, too, to life in prison.
When filmed by HBO init was reduced in length by about half and each interview subject was performed by a different actor--some of them members of the Techtonic Theatre Project, some of them well-known actors such as Laura Linney and Peter Fonda.
