Use sentence frames to state an opinion On day two, I introduced students to using sentence frames to state an opinion. I emphasized that they had to state their opinion using a sentence frame and give three reasons. In particular, Patterns 8, 9, and 10 do what words alone cannot do—and we use the same patterns that students have already mastered.

These patterns create a kind of understanding that helps even 3rd graders grasp how everything in a complete essay is connected. It took a lot of work to get everyone on the same page. Hold students accountable for the writing skills they learn across the curriculum.
